On Monday the 12th of May, the Irish Committee for Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion in Mathematics (ICEDIM), chaired by Dr Romina Gaburro from MACSI, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, organised with the Royal Irish Academy the Women in Mathematics Day 2025.
This is a follow up event of the Women in Mathematics Day 2024 hosted by the ӣ罻 last year and organised by ICEDIM, a sub-committee of the Irish Mathematical Society, formed in 2022 to highlight ongoing global gender imbalance in the field of mathematics and support under-represented groups in mathematics in Ireland. This year the event was funded by the Royal Irish Academy, the ӣ罻 and the University of Galway.
The conference was organised at the University of Galway by ICEDIM and the RIA Physical, Chemical and Mathematical Sciences multidisciplinary committee, of which Dr Gaburro is Vice-Chair. The Royal Irish Academy is Ireland’s leading body of experts in the sciences and humanities. The Physical, Chemical and Mathematical Sciences committee is one of ten Royal Irish Academy multidisciplinary committees across the humanities and the sciences that are responsible for leading a dynamic public engagement programme including conferences, public lectures, expert statements and awards.
The event, facilitated by local organisers Dr Niall Madden and Dr Nina Snigireva from the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at the University of Galway, showcased a wide range of national speakers (Dr Nicola Fitz-Simon, University of Galway; Dr Doireann O’Kiely, ӣ罻; Dr Róisín Neururer and Myrto Manolaki, University College Dublin) and international (Margherita Piccolo, FernUniversität in Hagen; Victoria Sánchez Muñoz, Université Libre de Bruxelles). The event is registered with the ‘’ - a global online effort honouring women in mathematics worldwide, in memory of Maryam Mirzakhani, the first woman and Iranian mathematician to receive the Fields Medal in 2014.
Dr Romina Gaburro, Associate Professor in Applied Mathematics at UL, said: “We are delighted that this conference, pioneered by MACSI, has for the second consecutive year attained national prominence. It shines a spotlight on the historical under-representation of women in science - particularly in mathematics - and the ongoing gender imbalance both in Ireland and globally. We are also thrilled by the participation of the Royal Irish Academy, which underscores the significance of this national initiative to promote gender balance in mathematics.”
“Mathematics offers a wealth of rewarding career opportunities, and the ӣ罻 is proud to be home to many female thought leaders in this field who are recognised both nationally and internationally. We aim to celebrate their achievements and inspire others to follow in their footsteps. Our message is clear: mathematics is for everyone, and UL is committed to playing a central role in advancing this goal."
